Summer Summer!

Happy First Full Day of Summer! <–kinda wish they made a card for that

How did you spend the solstice last night? Adam and I went to a five course food and wine pairing at one of our favorite little restaurants, which is conveniently located across the street from my apartment. I say convenient because after five (maybe 6, but who’s counting) generous “sipping” glasses of wine, it’s nice to be able to stumble walk home.

The restaurant, Two Boroughs Larder, is known for using all parts of the animal and not letting anything go to waste. They are inventive and creative, yet always manage to put something down with familiar flavors. It’s really quite great actually. Last night’s menu included oysters, lamb’s head (yeah, what’s up), octopus, rabbit, and fried peach pie. Each layer surpassed the one before, but after letting the flavors marinate I think the octopus soup was my ultimate favorite. It had a rich, smoky broth, slightly spicy with a potato puree at the bottom, which acted as a thickening agent. It was a perfect marriage of flavors and the wine they paired it with complimented it so nicely with equaled spiciness. Definitely a lasting dish that had us all wanting to tip it back.

The last time we ate at this restaurant we had sweetbreads, so I’m pretty sure I’ve done all my most adventurous eating there (minus horse in Switzerland, that was a little crazy). I like trying new flavors and experimenting a little with my food, though I will always be happy with comfort food and simple flavors. What about you? Eaten anything thrilling lately?
