My Own Private Book Club

Something’s not right when you see two different books by the same author in the “New Books” section of the library (I’m talking to you, “Danielle Steele”). <—That’s in quotes because, let’s be real, she’s not really writing all that, is she?? You can’t truly be churning out that much literature in such a short amount of time.

In other news, I need a brain break. This afternoon I returned Great House by Nicole Krauss and swore I was not going to check out another book. I have Catcher in the Rye and The History of Love, also by Krauss, sitting on my shelf waiting to have their spine cracked. But as I was about to turn around and march out I thought, Why don’t you see if they have Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson. I want to read this book so badly. Instead of carrying it out with my I got wait-listed, which is totally fine because I had every intention of leaving the library empty handed.

Instead, I perused the “New Books” section. I first saw This is Howby Augusten Burroughs, who is one of my favorite authors and also happens to be my polar opposite. His latest book is a brazen take on the self-help category, and while I think it looks terrific and appealing I just don’t think I can handle that much

introspection right now in this blazing 90-whatever degree heat. Rather, I came away with Ali in Wonderland by Ali Wentworth. I’ve heard good things, she’s pretty famous, Alec Baldwin says she’s funny and crazy like she’s on meth, yadda yadda yadda. I got it. And I’m excited. Because while my last two books haven’t been exactly brain busters, they certainly haven’t been casual books you take the beach. Great House had four tales discreetly woven together, tales you had to pay attention to, ones you couldn’t just skim over. The Russian Debutante’s Handbook was difficult in its own way, ways that I can’t even conjure right now because my brain is slowly melting. Dramatic sigh.

I just decided that I would allow myself to do the summer reading that I really want. Similar to settling down with Mindy Kaling and letting her tell me her story, I’m ready to just relax with Ali and take a mental holiday. J.D. Salinger, I’ll be looking to you soon.
